Hi guys, thanks for a great show. You guys should totally print up some shirts!

I'd love to hear more about practical uses of hermeticism. What do you do with the knowledge of Hermes?

Also what is the difference between hermeticism and hermetism?

Hi Patricia! Rest assure upcoming shows will cover several practical uses of the things we have been talking about so far.

Hermetism was the religious and philosophical movement in late antiquity that centered on the teachings of Hermes Trismegistus. Hermeticism (with the extra "ic") is the term used for the hermetic movement as it resurfaced around the time of the Renaissance. The two movements are separated by some 1500 years or so.

However you'll often see the later term hermeticism applied to the antique writings as well. Technically this is incorrect. But aa matter of fact I'm sure we've slipped on this one several times on the show already!

      Hi there Kenja,

thank you for your encouraging words! It took some experimentation to get the sound quality we are shooting for, and while we are not quite there yet we are getting pretty close. I hope you will keep listening...

Thanks so much for the podcast! You guys are really doing a great service.

I would like to know more about your background and how you came to study Hermeticism...I really appreciated Sean's openness on the podcast about astral projection. As someone struggling away from a fundamentalist Christian background I've really appreciated hearing the linkages to the Early Church fathers, Saints and the Bible.

Also, I'm personally interested in hearing more about the Golden Dawn and your opinions on the organization.

Thank you for your kind words.

In my early teen years I started studying world religion, the occult, and "new age" texts. In my early twenties, I became disheartened with the black hole towards which most of these studies led me. It wasn't until I became initiated into the Esoteric Order of the Golden Dawn that everything came together for me - both spiritually and mystically.

We try to keep Chasing Hermes religious-neutral, as well as order-neutral, but if you would like to know more about the Esoteric Order of the Golden Dawn or my personal views, feel free to drop me a line at info@chasinghermes.com.

      Best Regards,
           Sean

      Hi Larry,

thank you for taking the time to leave a comment! Over the years hermeticism has sort of become a frame of mind for me that I find myself relating to whether I'm exploring philosophy, myth or religion, and to some degree even science and contemporary cosmology. I suppose this came about little by little as I was studying all of those things. I found myself drawn to certain aspects of each of the fields and there seemed to me like I could see hints of some common ground.

It's appropriate to talk about this pursuit as a chase, I think, because the closer you get to the goal of your understanding, the further away the goalposts seem to move. When I discovered hermeticism it was like I had been handed a key to decipher a lot of what had been puzzling me until that point. Then I discovered the key was like a puzzle in itself. Funny, that.

Sean and I like to include references to the Christian and Judaic traditions in the show. Even though they are not strictly hermetic, these traditions passed through the same time and place as hermetism did. Ideas that are only hinted at in the scattered hermetic fragments that remain pop up in Judaic and Christian writing that have had thousands of years to develop. Furthermore, our societies are becoming increasingly secularized, but the fact remains that western thought is still being formed by Christianity -or by a reaction to it- and so we must acknowledge where those ideas entered into our cultural thinking.

As for the Golden Dawn, this is a subject that we will touch upon here and there throughout the show. The Golden Dawn is not everyone's cup of tea, but for us it is a great and worthwhile pursuit and as valid a spiritual path as any.

      Thanks for listening!

      Jason

Hi Lola. It's great to hear you would be able to stand us for more than 30 minutes at a time! The length of each episode is something we have been discussing for a while. Maybe we will experiment with longer episodes at some point. Thanks for listening to the show!

I just wanted to say that I have been really enjoying the show so far. A study in to the history of occult traditions has given me a desire to learn more about Hermetics and you both do a great introduction to this subject, very easy to understand but also thought provoking! Thank you.

I hope you will continue to create new podcasts, as it has been a few months since the last (we all have busy periods, I know!) and would personally like to hear a cast on the relationship between Astrology, Alchemy and Magic and how these three developed together under the sphere of Hermetic Philosophy.

Looking forward to hearing more from you, keep up the good work!

    Hey guys,

These are truly wonderful podcasts. The discussion-style sets your work apart from the more abundant interview style podcasts; which seems to be a lot of q & a, your work seems a lot more organic and in keeping with the namesake more mercurial. Right now, a most-wanted topic I would like to hear about is secrecy, in particular the practical benefits and importance of keeping a hermetic seal in any alchemical (spiritual or physical) endeavor.

Thanks guys, keep up the Great Work!

      Hello Manny,

thanks a lot for your feedback! We put a lot of thought into the format of the show and it's great to hear the show has been well received. For us it was very much a case of making something we would like to listen to ourselves.

The hermetic seal is a great topic actually. Let's see if we can come up with enough material to make it into a show. Until then I leave you with this artistic rendition which elucidates fully on the subject.

    Hello guys!
I am really enjoying your podcasts, they are so simple and well thought at the same time. I like to walk with them, makes me gaze introspectivly out to the world. I've walked the spiritual for a long time, but without particular focus on a "source" of knowledge. So this Hermetic journey is very interesting to me, I always like to broaden my perspectives, and, mostly, to connect the dots... plus the alchemical process had always intrigued me, so thanks to your show I have plunged into it furthermore.

Spiral out guys, and somewhere we will meet...

p.s. I've just finished school as a sound engineer, so if and when you need any kind of help and/or advice with any sound related question, or even to work on your files, I'll be very glad to help and share with you guys !!

I really like the podcast especially when it opens up a new place to discover. The conversational structure is really engaging as is your delivery.

How about a bit of "about your hosts"? You need your privacy but a lot of folks would be interested in learning more about your personal stories. That sort of leads into the next request which is addressing balancing careers with esoteric pursuits.

      Hey Karl,

this is an interesting coincidence. I was talking to a friend the other night about the need to balance your spiritual life with your mundane life. This is obviously a concern for a lot of seekers, who more often than not feel that their worldly self does not accurately reflect their spiritual self.

But is one of these two "selves" - the spiritual and the mundane - more genuine and real than the other? Does one of the selves have to change in order to accommodate or somehow integrate the other? Perhaps the mistake lies in thinking our selves need integrating at all. But we don't just have a spiritual and a mundane self, we have hundreds of "selves" or personalities that we are constantly moving in and out of. No one of these "selves" is more real than another.

Similarly, the idea of our future perfected selves that we are striving towards is, after all, a construct. It does not exist in any real sense. However what can be said to exist with some degree of certainty is who we are right now, in this very moment. Accepting who we are and the lives we have been allotted - and being thankful for these gifts - is often the first step towards real transformation.

As you might have suspected, I'm of the humble opinion that you can be a spiritual person in any conceivable walk of life; be it in an office, in a hospital, on the battle field, in a submarine, aboard the international space station, on Wall Street, or cleaning the bathroom stalls at Hooters. What kind of person you truly are depends a lot less on external factors than society would have you believe. It's all a matter of 1) attitude and 2) gratitude.

Thanks for stopping by to leave a comment!

      Sincerely,
      Jason
