Hey Karl,

this is an interesting coincidence. I was talking to a friend the other night about the need to balance your spiritual life with your mundane life. This is obviously a concern for a lot of seekers, who more often than not feel that their worldly self does not accurately reflect their spiritual self.

But is one of these two "selves" - the spiritual and the mundane - more genuine and real than the other? Does one of the selves have to change in order to accommodate or somehow integrate the other? Perhaps the mistake lies in thinking our selves need integrating at all. But we don't just have a spiritual and a mundane self, we have hundreds of "selves" or personalities that we are constantly moving in and out of. No one of these "selves" is more real than another.

Similarly, the idea of our future perfected selves that we are striving towards is, after all, a construct. It does not exist in any real sense. However what can be said to exist with some degree of certainty is who we are right now, in this very moment. Accepting who we are and the lives we have been allotted - and being thankful for these gifts - is often the first step towards real transformation.

As you might have suspected, I'm of the humble opinion that you can be a spiritual person in any conceivable walk of life; be it in an office, in a hospital, on the battle field, in a submarine, aboard the international space station, on Wall Street, or cleaning the bathroom stalls at Hooters. What kind of person you truly are depends a lot less on external factors than society would have you believe. It's all a matter of 1) attitude and 2) gratitude.

Hello fellow Philosopher Kings. Thank you for your work in doing this podcast. I am a recent university graduate, receiving a BA in Medieval History and Philosophy. Your podcasts echo many lectures on mysticism, Greek notions of natural science and hermeticism in general. Listening to your podcasts has become a new favoured hobby :)

I really like the podcast especially when it opens up a new place to discover. The conversational structure is really engaging as is your delivery.

How about a bit of "about your hosts"? You need your privacy but a lot of folks would be interested in learning more about your personal stories. That sort of leads into the next request which is addressing balancing careers with esoteric pursuits.

I was listening to 'magic in ancient egypt' and was thinking that Joseph Campbell might be another author that might be relevant to the treatment of spiritual scripture as myth ... see also "The Power of Myth" (interview between Bill Moyers and Joseph Campbell).
